Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura Oasis – Dades Valley

Your unforgettable journey from Marrakech to Fes begins with an early morning departure across the majestic High Atlas Mountains, following the winding roads of the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Along the way, you will pass through traditional Berber villages perched on the mountainsides. Your first major stop is the famous fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a backdrop for many films and TV series, such as Game of Thrones and Gladiator. After exploring the labyrinth of kasbahs and climbing to the top for panoramic views, continue to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa,” where you can optionally visit the Atlas Film Studios or the Kasbah Taourirt. The journey then heads east to the lush Skoura Oasis, filled with endless palm groves and historic kasbahs like Amridil Kasbah. Passing through the fragrant Valley of Roses at Kelaat M’Gouna, you’ll reach the impressive Dades Valley, famous for its dramatic red cliffs, ancient villages, and the winding “Monkey Fingers” rock formations. Dinner and overnight stay in a charming hotel or traditional riad overlooking the valley.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert (Sahara)

After breakfast, you will continue your journey along the stunning Dades Valley, taking in more breathtaking landscapes of steep gorges and fertile green fields. The route then leads you to the spectacular Todra Gorge, where you can enjoy a walk through its towering canyon walls rising up to 300 meters. This is a popular spot for rock climbers and photographers, offering plenty of opportunities to admire Morocco’s dramatic natural beauty. Moving on, the landscape becomes increasingly desert-like as you pass through Tinjdad and Erfoud, a town famous for its fossils and dates. In Erfoud, you might visit a traditional fossil workshop before heading towards the mesmerizing dunes of Merzouga. Here, you will meet your camel caravan for an unforgettable trek across the towering Erg Chebbi dunes, riding into the heart of the desert as the sun sets in brilliant colors. Arrive at your luxury or standard desert camp, where you will be welcomed with mint tea. Enjoy a delicious traditional dinner under the stars, followed by Berber music around the campfire. Spend the night in a private tent nestled among the dunes.

Day 3: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Ifrane – Fes

Wake up early to witness a truly magical sunrise over the Sahara Desert, painting the sands in hues of gold and orange. After breakfast at the camp, ride camels or drive 4×4 back to the village of Merzouga, where your driver awaits. Begin your journey northwards, passing through Erfoud once more and traveling along the beautiful Ziz Valley, known for its dramatic gorges and endless palm groves. Enjoy scenic stops for photography and refreshments as you continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Pass through Midelt, a town nestled between the ranges, famous for its apples and minerals, where you will stop for lunch. As you continue driving, the landscape becomes greener, and you will visit Ifrane, known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its clean streets, alpine-style architecture, and cool climate. After a short visit to Ifrane and possibly a quick stop in the cedar forests of Azrou to see wild Barbary macaques, the final stretch of the road takes you to the enchanting city of Fes, where your incredible desert journey concludes by late afternoon or early evening.

Optional Extra Authentic Days

To extend your Morocco Sahara Desert Tour to 4 or 5 days, consider adding one or both of the following unforgettable experiences.

Optional Day A:Excursion to the Valley of the Roses – A Scenic Off-Road Adventure in Morocco

After your first night in the stunning Dades Gorge, embark on what many consider the most beautiful day trip in Morocco — an off-the-beaten-path excursion to the Valley of the Roses. This region is renowned for its breathtaking mountain scenery, remote Berber villages, and vast rose fields that bloom vibrantly each May.

Your expert Morocco Voyage Travel  Tour-Driver-guide will take you on a thrilling off-road adventure through dramatic rock formations and high-altitude landscapes, reaching the foothills of Mount M’Goun, Morocco’s second-highest peak. Along the way, you’ll visit nomadic families living in remote cave dwellings, offering you the unique opportunity to share a traditional glass of tea and learn about their way of life.

Depending on the season and weather, enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch at a charming local restaurant or indulge in a picnic within a shaded gorge surrounded by natural beauty. You’ll then continue through the heart of the Valley of the Roses, a major global center for the cultivation of damask roses, which are harvested each spring for rosewater, essential oils, and cosmetics.

The valley stays lush and green for most of the year and is dotted with traditional kasbahs and earth-built Berber homes, making it a paradise for photographers and cultural enthusiasts. Optional easy walks are available through rose fields and nearby villages, offering an intimate glimpse into rural Moroccan life.

Return to the Dades Gorge by late afternoon, enriched by a day filled with natural wonders, cultural encounters, and unforgettable scenery.

Optional Day B:Explore the Sahara – Culture, Adventure & Nature in Erg Chebbi

Enhance your  Sahara Desert Tour by adding an unforgettable day of exploration in the Sahara Desert, perfect after your first night under the stars. This day offers a balance of relaxation, culture, and adventure—designed to deepen your connection to one of the most iconic landscapes on Earth.

Travel by 4×4 vehicle through the vast and varied terrain of the Sahara, including the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes, which rise up to 160 meters high, and the rocky Hamada desert plains. Discover hidden desert villages, abandoned mining sites from the French colonial era, and experience the enduring traditions of this remarkable region.

Stop in Merzouga, a vibrant desert town renowned for its rich cultural heritage. Here, you’ll witness a live performance of traditional Gnaoua music and dance, a captivating spectacle as musicians leap and spin to the rhythms of ancient African instruments—an experience unique to southeastern Morocco.

Nearby, the Dayet Srij Lake provides a surprising contrast to the surrounding sands. During certain seasons, the lake becomes a haven for migratory birds, including flamingos, making it a great stop for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Adventurous travelers will have the chance to enjoy a variety of fun Sahara activities, such as:

  • Sandboarding on the dunes.

  • Quad Biking or Dune Buggy Driving.

  • Extended camel trekking into the deeper desert.
