Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura Oasis – Kelaat Mgouna – Dades Gorges

Depart early from bustling Marrakech, heading south through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains, climbing the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of Berber villages and terraced farms clinging to the mountainsides. Your first major stop is the famous Ait Ben Haddou, a magnificent ksar (fortified village) and UNESCO World Heritage Site where many famous films, such as Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia, were filmed. After exploring its narrow alleys and ancient mud-brick structures, continue to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa” for its film studios and historic kasbahs. Next, you visit the Skoura Oasis, a palm-filled paradise dotted with beautiful kasbahs like the impressive Kasbah Amridil. The journey continues through the fragrant Valley of Roses in Kelaat Mgouna, especially vibrant during the rose harvest season in April and May. By evening, you will reach the dramatic Dades Gorges, famous for its towering rock formations and breathtaking landscapes, where you will enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in a traditional hotel or riad.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, explore the stunning scenery of the Dades Valley, where you’ll see unique rock formations like the “Monkey Fingers” and traditional Berber villages tucked into the hillsides. The road then winds through spectacular scenery until you reach the awe-inspiring Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls rise up to 300 meters high and are separated by a crystal-clear river. You’ll have time to walk and admire the sheer cliffs and the lush palm oasis that thrives at the bottom of the gorge. Continuing the journey deeper into the desert, you’ll pass through Erfoud, a town known for its rich fossil finds and as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” Here, you may visit a fossil workshop or local souk. Finally, you reach Merzouga, at the foot of the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes. Experience a thrilling camel trek over the rolling dunes at sunset, then arrive at your desert camp, where a traditional Berber dinner, music around the campfire, and a night under the starry sky await you.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Draa Valley – Marrakech

Wake up early for a magical sunrise over the dunes, painting the sand in hues of gold and pink. After a hearty breakfast in camp, ride your camel back to Merzouga and prepare for the return journey. The first stop is Rissani, an ancient desert town and former caravan center, known for its authentic souks, traditional spices, and fresh dates. Here you can visit the historic Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, the founder of the Alaouite dynasty. From Rissani, drive through the ever-changing landscapes toward the lush Draa Valley, Morocco’s largest date palm valley stretching along the Draa River. Enjoy the dramatic contrast between the dry desert and the greenery of thousands of palm trees. Crossing the Anti-Atlas Mountains, you’ll pass charming villages and incredible rock formations. Finally, you’ll rejoin the High Atlas road, crossing back over the mountains to arrive in Marrakech in the late evening, where your unforgettable Sahara adventure concludes.
